#3 Fred Williamson – Fred Williamson played defensive back during the 1960s and upon his retirement he moved into acting almost immediately. #2 Woody Strode – Woody Strode is not a name recognized by most football fans. He played collegiately at UCLA, on the same team as Jackie Robinson, and then went on to play just one season in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams in 1946. He was one of the first African American athletes to appear in the National Football League, and he would later play professional football in Canada too. I’m sure Todd Holland had no idea what a storm his comments at last weeks Outfest would cause. When he said that any aspiring gay actors should keep the closet door firmly shut if they wanted a Hollywood career, the gay blogosphere and Twitter universe went into overdrive.

I wasn’t going to wade into the debate, but I shall now. I think Todd and all those attacking him for stating a regressive point-of-view are looking at it all wrong. Hollywood isn’t homophobic, it’s economic. Studios spend hundreds of millions of dollars on making and promoting movies and when you’re playing with those sorts of figures you can’t take any chances, not just with the public perception of your actors, but with any part of the production.

Lets face it, the carefully crafted public image of movie stars is a million miles from the real person anyway – there’s a whole army of PR people constantly at work on this, and why? Because movie stars are designed to lead an aspirational life for the majority of moviegoers, not a minority.

The stark lack of out and proud actors is also a product of the way cinemas work. It’s all about appealing to the widest demographic – or pandering to the lowest common denominator, depending on how you look at it. Cinemas only show a limited number of films at any one time and the competition between studios to take a slice of the audience pie is fierce. They won’t risk anything that might make Joe Public pick the other film and not theirs.

So, what’s to be done? I think it will sort itself out with the gradual diversification and niching down of entertainment, including movies. Movies will become cheaper, will be delivered over the internet and will aim for more specialist markets. So gay moviemakers, in effect, will be able to cut out the middle man and make the sort of movies gay viewers want to see, with gay actors, and if they appeal to a broader audience, then great.

I believe gay filmmaking should always be on the fringes, because that’s a more interesting place to be. And with it becoming easier to make and distribute movies, we’ll, hopefully, start seeing better, more cutting edge, stories. And if Hollywood sees cool, hip stuff being made with gay actors in it, they’ll come calling. I say make them come to us, not the other way around.

Of course, in the economics of the Internet, a sizeable minority of the world’s population starts to look very attractive. That could well be the scent to get Hollywood sniffing at the closet door.

Animal Actors

Remember the cute little doggie in the movie “As Good as it Gets”, or the monkey in the television series, “Friends”? These are some of the most sought after actors there are–animal talent is out there–but much more scarce. After all, at what point in his or her life does a monkey or a cat or a bird or a cute little doggie say “I want to be an actor, mommy. Can you take me to some classes, find me a manager or get me an audition?” Honestly, it is likely the filmmakers who worry most about trained animal talent. But sometimes, the animal role in a film, television series or play can be absolutely vital to the success of it.

For example, in the film “Arachnophobia” there are more spiders than you can count–so how did the directors get spiders trained to move the right way, to come down from the shower curtain into the drain. I assume that in some cases there had to be many takes. The filmmakers also had to choose a type of spider that looked dangerous and scary but that would not actually harm the cast if anything got out of hand. I know that in many scenes when the spiders were supposed to run or move in a certain direction, the filmmakers used hotplates under the sets where the spiders were walking. The spiders would walk away from the hotplates in the direction that the script called for them to go. Animal talent of this sort is not as necessary anymore, at least as far as spiders are concerned. If you might recall, the spiders, and most of the other animals used in the Harry Potter movies are all computer generated.

As far as the cute little doggie with the cute little face in “As Good as it Gets” goes–that precious little guy should have gotten an award as best supporting actor! He had been trained to walk over cracks in the sidewalk, to look as if he were about to cry, and became one of the most pivotal and dimensional characters in the whole movie. This puppy was able to convey human emotion to the point where the audience got choked up over it.

I am sure there are schools to train for animal talent in such detail that these types of four-legged stars are possible. And I’m sure that there are some pet owners who envision their own pets on the silver screen one day. However, I would venture to guess that the ratio of animal talent versus the human talent out there is little (in animals) to too much (in humans). For human actors the casting directors question is–who will be best for the part. Far animal talent, the question that casting directors will be asking is–is there an animal out there that can do what we need it to do? The answer is not always yes–and animals like the dog in “As Good as it Gets” can’t be computer generated. They need to be genuine and interactive. Plainly put a good animal actor is quite hard to find.

Have you noticed in recent times, especially in the last 4 years, the movement of some Nollywood stars into the Nigerian music industry?

Perhaps, the ban placed on some members of Nollywood some few years ago might have been responsible for this. Notice I used the word “Might”.

Sometimes pressure brings out the best in you and even makes you do or achieve what you never thought you could do. This could be the case with some of these actors and actresses turned musicians.

While the ban was an avenue for some others to explore their talent of music which had seemingly looked locked up hither to, for others like kate Henshaw, and Stella Damasus who were already into music before Nollywood, they just continued in their old act.

Well, the good thing about it is that it brought out the other side of these actors and actresses. Who would have thought that the likes of Patience Ozonkwo popularly known as “Mama G”, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), Comedy Maestro Nkem Owoh, Genevieve Nnaji, Segun Arinze, Desmond Elliot and even Ramsey Noah popularly referred to as “Fine Boy” could sing the way they did.

However you want to look at it I would say it wasn’t a bad first outing for those of them that were first timers in the music industry.

This is also the case in the music industry, as some Artistes in times past and even presently have at one point or the other featured in movies .Artistes like Onyeka Owenu who is an epitome of both the old and new generation, Tu face Idibia, Muma G, Sound Sultan, Pasuma, Obesere, Baba D, amongst others are all further proofs of the fact that there’s a strong bond between Music, Movie, and the people who play these roles either as Artistes or Actors.

The Actor – Artiste fusion is not just a Nigerian thing, it is Universal. American Beyonce as a Singer and Actress, Ice Cube as a Rap Artiste and Actor, Jennifer Lopez, the list is endless. Look all around you, irrespective of your environment, you will find them.

So Nigerians lets encourage our own and not pull them down. Give them a chance.

There are a lot of programs out there that entice people to sign-up for stardom. These are all cons; the business does not work that way. Whenever someone asks you for money, to get into the business, run the other way!

These people may promise that you will meet a casting director from a big city and they charge any where from $500 to $2,000; and promise acting movie parts. But why would they bring in a casting director to cast an unknown actor when they can have their pick of already working actors in the area?

There is only one way to break into showbiz and that’s by studying the craft and becoming good at it. You will never buy your way into it. You may know someone that could pull some strings for you, and get you in, but that will not make you an actor. You will still need to learn the craft. And don’t forget to use your head. Take to time to learn the business end of showbiz.

Everybody in this industry is trying to make money, especially casting directors and agents. If an agent looks at you and really believes in your talent, you are seen as a product that he can sell; then he’s not going to ask you for any money.

If an agent tells you that you need to pay a registration fee to be represented, go to his photographer and/or to take his acting classes….that’s illegal. That is definitely a no-no in the industry. But there are still people doing it because they think you’re not aware of the scam.

Most of us are not stupid; but sometimes, in our eagerness to follow our dream of being in the movies, we let our guard down. When people tell you they can help get you there, it is easy for you to believe them because they have painted a beautiful picture of you getting there. It’s easy to be ripped off. And people know that, and they have no scruples about taking your money.

An agent provides an actor an opportunity for an audition… the actor then gets his own job!
There are some sad stories out there where a young actress wanted so badly to follow her dream that it cost her $5,600 just to get three head shots done. Don’t fall victim to this. Use your smarts, do the research, stay informed.

It is very important that actors study SAG rules. The rules are there for a reason, to protect actors, so that an actor isn’t taken advantage of. Even if you don’t ever want to join the union, you still owe it to yourself to know the rules of the business. So, stay informed and study your craft, then go out and become a working actor.

People are always asking me, “What are your Favorite Comedy Movies?”, “Who is your favorite Comedian or Comedic Actor of all time and who is your Favorite working today?” and questions such as that, as if I have a better take than they do. But that is not true. We are all affected in the same ways from the same stimuli. I guess the only difference is that maybe it influenced me in some way, maybe even subconsciously and very possibly shaped my own stage personna somehow. So anyway, here we go.

My absolute Favorite Comedic Movie Actor of all time was beyond a shadow of doubt, Groucho Marx. I used to laugh out loud so hard watching The Marx Brothers movies as a kid and still do ’till this day, which probably explains why my Favorite Comedy Movie of all time is ‘A Day At The Races’. The scene with Groucho as Doctor Hackenbush on the phone driving Mr. Whitmore absolutely nuts is hysterical. And of course, who can forget the notorious operating room scene when all three Marx Brothers are examining Margaret Dumont and all the mayhem that ensues.

The physical comedy of Harpo, the musical comedy of Chico and the lines that Groucho would get away with in those glorious movies are still so memorable and still hold up today. The most amazing thing to me was the double entente insults and sexual innuendos that Groucho would say, especially for that era. I mean it was, after all, the 30′s and 40′s and the censors must have been pulling out their collective hair.

I also don’t want to forget about some of my other Favorite Acts of those great comedic times. Abbott & Costello were the best of both worlds in Comedy. They were Cerebral and Slapstick at the same time and their routines will live on as long as there are people living and laughing. Bud Abbott, even though he was labeled the best straight man in the business, was an incredible comedian with flawless timing. Without him the comedy would not have worked. Their chemistry together was impeccable.

Let’s also add in Laurel & Hardy. How could one not love them. They had a sweetness about them and it came across in their comedy, no matter the situation they were in. Does anyone, besides me, remember the movie in which Laurel gets his head banged by a closing window in a college dorm room and he becomes a super intelligent, strong sports hero. Apparently that was who he was until a similar accident happened many years before while he was attending Oxford and he became the Stan Laurel we were all accustomed to. Oh, don’t worry he hits his head again at the end and becomes himself again…..Classic!

During the 50′s & 60′s I loved to watch Jerry Lewis movies. I know people like to throw the word ‘genius’ around a lot but he truly was. I loved ‘The Errand Boy’. The premise being that he was an errand boy for Paramutual Movie Studios and all he had to do was what he was told to do. But of course, he screwed that all up and somehow ruined all the movies being made at the studio by either accidentally being on the set at the wrong time and getting into the movie. Or how about the time he goes into a sound studio and by playing around he unintentionally does a voice over of a song that on the soundtrack, was supposed to be a woman singing.

Well, to cut to the chase, as all of the studio executives are watching all the dailys and previews of all the studios movies ( One of my Favorite Comedy Scenes), people are laughing their respective heads off watching and listening to this fool. They think it is part of the plan and of course, a star is born. I loved the old Martin & Lewis movies also. The Stooge was terrific with many great scenes. It was almost biographical in a way.

Gene Wilder in The Producers with Zero Mostel is absolutely brilliant. What a terrific performance, as always. And that was just the beginning of his body of classic work. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Lady In Red, and the fabulous movies partnered with greatly missed, Richard Pryor: Stir Crazy, Silver Streak, Another You (One of my Favorites they did together) and See No Evil Hear No Evil. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor together were so much fun to watch. I know it’s a term that gets used a lot, but I simply loved their chemistry together. They had perfect timing, which is so essential in Team Comedy.

Now on to another one of my Favorites, Peter Sellers. What an amazing body of work this man created. The masterpiece Dr. Strangelove in which he played more than one character is timeless and such a tour de force. He played Dr. Strangelove, The President of The United States and an English Soldier and played them all brilliantly. Then you have all of the Pink Panther Movies as Inspector Clouseau. I loved watching that bumbling character that everything seemed to work out for and how that drove Inspector Dreyfuss insane, literally. Great Physical Comedy at it’s best! One of my favorite scenes in those movies was the one where he is masquerading as a dentist and has to pull out Inspector Dreyfuss’ tooth (Herbert Lom). He proceeds to give him Nitrous Oxide, laughing gas, and the result is hysterical. He pulls the wrong tooth and the both of them are completely overwhelmed by the gas and are laughing continiously throughout the scene. Fantastic!! I also loved his last performance in Being There. That really showed his talent as a Comedic Artist. The character was so simple yet the plot was so deep on many levels and still was funny at the same time. He owned the rights to that story for quite a while and I am so glad that he finally got the chance to do it before his demise. It would have sad not to have that movie in his credits.

My Favorite Comedic Actor of today is a 4-way tie between Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams & Tom Hanks. Bill Murray gets the edge here for me because as soon as I see him on screen, I am smiling and then laughing. He always has that smirk on his face that conveys that he is putting you on. Stripes, What About Bob, Caddyshack & Groundhog’s Day are so wonderfully funny. I could never imagine anyone else playing those parts. Jim Carrey is the modern day Jerry Lewis for me. He is absolutely so rubbery and animated but most importantly, so over-the-top.

I love comedians and comedic actors that are fearless and aren’t afraid to let go and he is one of the few……Chris Farley also comes to mind in that respect. It is a real shame that we lost him so early. I can only wonder what he would have achieved in the years to come. I really respect Tom Hanks & Robin Williams tremendously because not only are they great comedic actors but also can deliver drama equally as well. They can make you laugh and then make you cry in the next moment. That is a rare gift and a great talent.

And then there is the imcomparable Eddie Murphy, who I think is a Fantastic Comedic Actor with incredible presence on stage and on screen. Not many compare with his consistency. He stole the show in Trading Places, 48 Hours 1 & 2, and Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2 and as Peter Sellers did, was brilliant portraying all of the characters in Coming To America and of course, The remake of The Nutty Professor. I loved all of those people he created in his family. ‘Hercules, Hercules, Hercules!’

So, here it is:

My Top 10 List of Favorite Comedic Movie Actors

1. Grouco Marx with The Marx Brothers

2. Abbott & Costello

3. Jerry Lewis

4. Laurel & Hardy

5. Bill Murray

6. Jim Carrey

7. Peter Sellers

8. Gene Wilder

9. Richard Pryor

10. Robin Williams, Tom Hanks & Eddie Murphy (Tied for 10th)

Alright, so there’s more than 10 people on there. So sue me.
Well, that’s it for today and for my Favorite Comedic Actors of All Time in Movies. Of course, there are so many more great ones that I have loved to watch over the years but those are the ones that have made me laugh the hardest consistently and sometimes until it hurt! Who are your Favorite Top 10? Good luck narrowing your list down. It is very difficult.

In the days to come, I will write about my Favorite Comedy TV Actors & Shows, Favorite Comedy Movies, Past & Present Day Comedians (Ones that are famous and ones that people should know about but might not), Comedy Albums and anything else I can think of.

A trip to the cinema is something that many of us enjoy. Though people may have different tastes in films, many have favourite actors and actresses. Who would you say is the most successful actor of all time?
I’ve been reading about the Oscars (the Academy Awards) and looking at the list of previous winners to see if there are any candidates that really stand out. It’s been interesting to look through the list of names, like stepping through the history of cinema.

Not many actors have won more than one award for their acting ability, so those who have done so are really highlighted as truly great film stars.
Among those who have won an oscar for their acting on two separate occasions are the likes of Tom Hanks (a winner in 1993 for ‘Philadelphia’ and again the following year for ‘Forrest Gump’), Hilary Swank and Denzel Washington. Such modern stars of the movies easily come to find.

Stepping back a bit further in time, Marlon Brando (a winner in 1954 for On The Waterfront and again in 1972 for ‘The Godfather’) is another who many would hold up as an example of a truly great actor.
Also with 2 Oscar wins are Jodie Foster, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Taylor and Vivien Leigh, to name but a few.

The list of actors and actresses with 3 Oscar wins reveals a very select group indeed. Ingrid Bergman and Jack Nicholson each have that honour, as does Walter Brennan.
Brennan may be a less well known name to more recent cinema audiences, having won the last of his awards in 1940, for his role in ‘The Westerner’.

There is one star who stands ahead of all the rest: Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn won 4 Oscars, over a span of some 49 years.
She can certainly lay claim to having been one of the finest actresses of all time, with her awards coming for her roles in ‘Morning Glory’, ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’, ‘The Lion in Winter’ and ‘On Golden Pond’.

We may disagree with the decisions of the judges, but there is no doubt that those who have won multiple Oscars include some of the world’s greatest all time actors.

Highest Paid Actors in Hollywood

There is a high salary paid to famous actors in a movie. Some of these actors are so popular, that just associating the name of an actor with that movie can make that movie popular as well. In addition, the character of the actor spreads its quality and skill throughout the movie. Celebrities are the attention seekers valued for the position they hold in society. People cross various limits for just getting a glimpse of them sometimes.

Starting with actors according to Forbes Magazine, Matt Damon will be earning $29 million now onwards. His role in the first two Bourne films has netted $850 million and the third is now on the top of the U.S. Box Office.

The second on the list is Brad Pitt falling a place down and pocketing $24 million today whereas Vince Vaughn is on the third position after a tie up with Johnny Depp of Pirates of the Caribbean. Backing them up are the handsomes named Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise earning of salary of $30 million per film.

The one-time famous heroes Brad Pitt and Leonardo Di Caprio earn only $20 million adding up 20 percentage of the gross box office turn over per movie.
